Why a canoe enthusiast gave away a favorite paddle

Darren Bush admits it; he dances the line between collecting and hoarding. His object of fascination is canoe paddles. He has dozens of paddles with dozens of names: Turtle Paddle, Bending Branches, Badger, Sanborn, Fritz Orr, Shaw and Tenney, Mitchell, Quimby, Old Mustache, Carolina Carver, and a few homemade ones. Some paddles he bought, others were gifted.

Darren has a rule about gifts. He won’t sell anything that was given to him. And, when the time is right, he will give that item to someone else. With one carbon-fiber paddle, that time came on a trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Darren Bush is a writer, hospice chaplain, avid paddler and owner of Rutabaga Paddlesports in Madison, Wisconsin.
